If you’ve just moved into a modern new build in Newquay, you’ve probably encountered the joy (read: frustration) of plasterboard walls. While they look clean and fresh, many homeowners quickly realise they can’t just whack a nail in and hang up a picture like they could in older properties. But don’t panic – with the right tools and a bit of know-how (which I happen to have in spades), you can make your walls work for you.

As your local handylady in Newquay, I’m here to take the mystery out of plasterboard and help you get your home feeling cosy, practical, and truly yours – without the worry of things coming crashing down in the night!

What Is Plasterboard, Anyway?

Plasterboard (also known as drywall or gypsum board) is what many new build homes use for internal walls. It’s quick to install and gives a lovely smooth finish – but it’s not designed to hold heavy weight without the proper fixings.

That’s where many folks run into trouble. Luckily, I’ve got the tools, the fixings, and the experience to get it done safely and securely.

Yes, You Can Put Things on Plasterboard Walls

Here’s a list of popular items I regularly install for customers in new builds around Newquay and the surrounding areas:

Picture Frames & Mirrors

Light to medium-weight frames are absolutely fine with the correct wall plugs or plasterboard fixings. I always assess the weight and type of wall to choose the safest option – and I’ll make sure everything’s level too!

Floating Shelves

Yes, even floating shelves can be fitted to plasterboard. For heavier loads (like books or kitchenware), I’ll locate the wall studs or use high-strength anchors designed for hollow walls.

Bathroom Accessories

Toilet roll holders, towel rails, and cabinets can be fitted with water-resistant fixings. It’s vital to use rust-proof screws and plugs in damp spaces – and I always seal around fittings for extra protection.

TV Brackets

Mounting a TV? That’s one to be done properly. I always check for timber studs or use special grip-it fixings made for heavier loads. Don’t try this one with a basic screwdriver and hope for the best!

Coat Hooks, Rails & Peg Boards

Ideal for entryways and utility rooms – just because your walls are plasterboard doesn’t mean you can’t hang up your coat in style. With the right support, even a fully loaded rack is possible.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t use standard nails or screws – they won’t grip and could cause damage.

  • Don’t guess – I always use a stud finder to locate strong points behind the wall.

  • Don’t overload – weight needs to be evenly distributed and suitable for the fixings used.

Why Call a Handylady?

Let’s be honest – nobody wants to deal with cracked plaster or collapsing shelves. By getting a professional handylady in, you’ll:

  • Save time (no more staring at a spirit level for half an hour)

  • Keep your walls looking neat and tidy

  • Make sure it’s safe and properly installed

  • Avoid damage to your brand new home

I bring all the right fixings, tools, and know-how – plus I clean up after myself. Bonus!
